Two general rules for playing NL

Postby k3nt » Wed Aug 03, 2005 9:26 am

I'm trying to get some rules into my head. They need to be instantly accessible, so in the heat of the moment I remember them.

Here are two proposed rules. Please let me know if you agree with them.

(I came up with them last night after violating them and dropping money I should not have dropped.)

Rule #1. If you have AK and raise it up a solid amount and get callers, and then one of them leads into you on an undercard flop, ALWAYS FOLD.

Rule #2. If you have TPTK out of position, an opponent flat calls you to the river, and then raises your river bet big, ALWAYS FOLD. People do NOT bet big like that with just TP, and people do NOT bluff over a bet on the river after flat calling all the way.

Are there any situations in which these rules do not apply?

General rules are not usually good to follow EVERY time...BUT...since you want a rule to use MOST of the time....

1) Agree (well at least 90% of the time)

2) I think a better rule is this...when you bet TPTK 3/4 pot to full pot on the flop and turn, check the river to him when youre out of position. Decide whether to check/call or check/fold depending on the cicumstance. If you do bet the river and he raises, I think its a fold 95% of the time.

Full pot on flop...1/2 pot on turn....1/4 pot at river and call pot sized raise? Thats UGLY.

Some people will bluff raise the river when you do that, so its much cheaper to bet more earlier in the hand. Thats way you know hes not bluffing when he raises the river.

Yup, it was ugly. Thing is, even played that way I don't see anybody bluffing like that, at low limits. He caught the nut straight (gutshot) on the river -- even calling half pot on the turn was a bad call, but I made it good for him by calling his big river raise.

AQ vs QJ on a board of AKxxT. Bleah.

I am getting more used to bodog. Took three full stacks last night in two hours. Clearing the bonus at about $5 an hour at the $25 tables. Good times.

Anyway, I'm glad my rules are OK.

I like ´em!

Another rule: Dont play when your day has been bad and you are in bad mood.

I have been playing with a notebook to take note of outdrawns and and money lost in bad moves. Last night I was really mad because of personal situation. Is started playing and made three mistakes (horrible ones and calling all in PF a very known ROCK with TT) that costs me $58 dollars. I was mad and, somehow, sometimes you think that giving money away or bullying other players will make you feel better. I think this rule is in the NL and PL Holden of Reuben and Ciaffone but it s good to bring it to our attention.

Last night I lost 80. Obvious bad moves cost me 58. I was outdrawn with very very awfull calls for $36. That big 3buy in losing day (biggest in a while) could be only one buy in if it wasnt because of playing stupidly.

Just wanted to take it out of the system....
