Is this a pretty standard play when you hold a pocket pair that you are unsure is good?

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (10 handed)

BB ($107.15)
UTG ($80.30)
Hero ($144.05)
UTG+2 ($81.03)
MP1 ($100.20)
MP2 ($98)
MP3 ($114.70)
CO ($177.50)
Button ($102.60)
SB ($193.65)

Preflop: Hero is UTG+1 with [Tc], [Td]. SB posts a blind of $0.50.
1 fold, Hero calls $1, UTG+2 raises to $5, 7 folds, Hero calls $4.

Flop: ($11.50) [4d], [3c], [4s] (2 players)
Hero bets $8, UTG+2 folds.

Final Pot: $19.50

Results in white below:
No showdown. Hero wins $19.50.

If he raises, i'm gone. If he calls, I'm in a difficult decision. How do you play these situations? This is something that might be easier out of position on the flop as you can fire first but difficult on the later streets.

Obviously he had AK, and followed my new rule and laid it down. But if he has JJ or better and just flat calls, you're still not sure what to do. Tricky spot.

Maybe check-raise the flop? If he has AK there's no way he can feel good about calling a check-raise. If he has AA through JJ he'll call (or re-raise) and you can be done with the hand.
