Set vs a str8 draw

Postby AlamedaMike » Wed Jul 27, 2005 10:39 pm

Sometimes you can not win for losing.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $1.00 BB (8 handed)

CO ($46.25)
Button ($99.60)
SB ($56.15)
Hero ($48.55)
UTG ($419.05)
UTG+1 ($43.30)
MP1 ($58.85)
MP2 ($46)

Preflop: Hero is BB with [5c], [5h].
1 fold, UTG+1 calls $1, 1 fold, MP2 calls $1, 2 folds, SB completes, Hero checks.

Flop: ($4) [Ks], [5d], [4c] (4 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $6, UTG+1 calls $6, MP2 calls $6, SB folds.

Turn: ($18) [6d] (3 players)
Hero bets $7, UTG+1 raises to $40.3, MP2 folds

I folded this hand. Second inside str8 today.
Some days you are the bug and some days you are the windshield. :D

The Big Lebowski: Are you employed, sir?
The Dude: Employed?
The Big Lebowski: You don't go out looking for a job dressed like that? On a weekday?
The Dude: Is this a... what day is this?

First off, you shouldn't be playing short stacked as it gives you limited options.

What is your read on the villain? You assume he has an inside straight draw and hit it on the turn? You folded so how do you know?

I bet the pot on the flop, not overbet.

Turn, I bet about $15 and then call all in to that raise. Unless he is playing 23, its hard to believe he called an overbet of the pot with just a gutshot. I think its more likely he has 44 than 78. He could just take your turn bet as weak and is aggressive enough to raise you with just a king. As a short stack, its a definite call. If you had a full stack, its a closer decision but its would take a very good read to drop a set on that board.

What was your thinking with the underbet on the turn? I don't mean to pile on you here, but given the fact that you show weakness on the turn how can you then fold to a raise? If you both had large stacks and you lead out for full pot on the turn I could see considering folding to an all-in raise. But you don't know if he's raising you because you showed weakness or if it's because he has a monster. He could as easily have two pair (playing a suited connector or even Kxs) as a straight, and you have outs regardless.

But I see no point in a less than half pot bet on the turn.
