QJ becomes top two but gets a lot of action

Postby Stoneburg » Tue Jul 26, 2005 7:33 pm

Standard loose prima table. Both opponents are loose, Jorkar ($4.30) passive BigBazza ($18) more aggressive. I have them covered.

OpeningBetRound
------------------
FHult7 : Calls for 0.20
Burre78 : Calls for 0.20
speldosa : Folds
ETTAN1 : Calls for 0.20
jorkar : Calls for 0.20
bigmalky1974 : Folds
brattlof : Folds
BigBazza : Calls for 0.10
Stoneburg : Checks [Qs] [Js]

Flop $1.20 [Jh] [Qh] [8s]
------------------
BigBazza : Bets 0.60
Stoneburg : Raises for 2.40
FHult7 : Calls for 2.40
Burre78 : Folds
ETTAN1 : Folds
jorkar : Calls for 2.40
BigBazza : Raises for 3.60
Stoneburg : Calls for 1.80
FHult7 : Calls for 1.80
jorkar : Went all-in 1.70

When I get re-raised I'm really hating my hand. Now I figure I'm probably up against 88 or T9. I just can't get myself to fold though and decide to take a card off.

Turn $17.90 [2s]
------------------
BigBazza : Checks
Stoneburg : Bets 7.40
FHult7 : Folds
BigBazza : Calls for 7.40

Firs of all, I improve my hand with a flush draw. Second of all... he checks! He can't check here with the straight or set, he has to protect it against the flush draw!

River $32.70 [4d]
------------------
BigBazza : Bets 0.80
Stoneburg : Raises for 8.00 (that's enough to put him all-in)

That's a blocking bet if I ever saw one. Now I am thinking my hand is good so I set him all-in.

Over played? Is the flop really a push/fold situation or is it ok to play it the way I did?

Here are my weak ideas for a loose Prima table:
-AJ or AQ raises preflop
-JJ or QQ raises PF
-88 is plausible for the flopped set and he's trapping you. Doesn't explain the river bet though. Looks like a total blocking bet. Or it's a trap to draw you to put him all in.

If he had Q9 or QT he'd like his TP with the gutshot and was trying to hit it cheaply. He called the turn loosely.

I like the way you played. But I'm an idiot, so I could be way off for this hand...

Stoneburg, I really disagree with your analysis on the turn. Yes, he can't possibly check there with the straight because he has to protect against the flush draw -- but if he's a typical Prima monkey, he doesn't KNOW that. That's way too advanced thinking for these guys.

Given that, I'm sure he has a good hand. The half pot bet then min-re-raise on the flop says so. But then, a lot of these guys don't know the difference between two pair and a straight -- they're both "good hands." I check behind on the turn. And I flat call the river.

I don't know any of the names here; obviously playing at different times of day gets you different opponents. So I don't have a read.

Just going from my general Prima $20 NL experience, I expect he called the river and showed you, um, either Q8, J8, QQ, JJ, 88, or T9. Probably not T9 or he would have bet more on the river. I'm going to guess 88.

I like potting it on the turn, you picked up extra outs to a made hand and it puts him in while you are drawing live if you are indeed drawing.

I raise up blocking bets too, with mixed results, track who weak leads with a monster and who is making bonifide blocking bets. This will make this play easier to stomach in the future. You can often get this information for free by observing hands that you aren't involved.
