Scared set of 9s

Postby iceman5 » Fri Jul 15, 2005 11:33 am

$1/$2NL

UTG ($350) limps, I limp with 99 ($200)..3 more limpers and blinds are in. 7 to the flop.
Pot is $14. The flop comes [Ac][4s][9d]. UTG bets $6, I call and another limper ($250) calls.

UTG is new but appears to be pretty good. He beat my AQs with AK and played it perfectly.

Pot is $32. The turn is the [Kc]. UTG bets $34...Hmmm, he really likes his hand. I dont want to lose the other guy yet and the board is about as non scary as you can get except for a back door flush.so I flat call. Other guy folds.

Pot is $100. The river is the [5s]. He bets $100. Did he limp UTG with AA? AK? he raised to $10 with AK last time. He really is not afraid of me. I have about $160. Call or push? Folding is out of the question of course.

well I don't make a habit of giving Ice too much advice but...

I think I push.

I can see him limping with AA or KK to re-raise and a raise never came.

your ahead of A10, AJ, AQ, AK, or a smaller set. however if he has AA, or KK he stacks you

Since you are only behind on two hands and I think he has AQ, or a set of 4's (although UTG may be a tad early to limp with 44)

It's not a terrible board for you and he most likely has you on A10 - AK

And you said I played scared with my 5's full earlier!

This is an auto-push on the river. If he has AA, so be it. While it is possible, I think that 44 and AK are much more likely, or even A4s or A9s - I would have played them the exact same as he did. But, if I limped AA UTG and hit that flop, it would have been one of the few instances where I slowplay - There are just no draws on the board.

AA is just not very likely. Truthfully, I usually just neglect it altogether in unraised pots, unless I know the opponent has a habit of only limping AA & KK UTG. An if you go broke with 2nd set - so be it.

I will start by saying I too don't make it a habit of giving the all mighty one iceman advice or my opinion all that often (usually because my opinion is the exact opposite of what is correct), but having said that, I will say what I think of the hand anyways.

Given that you said he is fairly new I am assuming you don't have much of a read on him other than the one hand he showed down which you thought he played perfectly.

Perhaps he is tricky enough to play AA or KK just they way he did. As you said you were not raising his bets on the flop or the turn b/c there was no realistic draw out there, so perhaps he was just as not worried about the draw as you were. He really underbets the pot on the flop, which makes me belive weakness. Then on the Turn he bets the pot. My guess is he is putting you on an A...maybe AQ or AJ, and he has KK. That would explain the weak bet on the flop...fearing the A, and then the pot sized bets on the turn and river. After the K falls on the Turn he knows he has you beat, and figuring you for an A, he knows he can bet the pot on each street and keep you in the hand.

This is of course an opinion of an insignificant little amateur that plays at the $25 tables, so I could be way off base.

I remember reading wise advice here on this forum over and over again. Something along the lines of "if you never fold a set, you'll come out ahead (barring obvious straights or flushes, of course)".

No flush is possible and the only straight possibility is something that would seem foolish to play.
