Calling a mini-raise with AJo

Postby Stoneburg » Wed Jun 29, 2005 2:04 pm

I've got $35, Joansi is the big stack and covers me, TKM has about $20 and is sLA.

stoga : Posts small blind 0.10
DeejayTiger : Posts big blind 0.20
Botaka : Folds
Fortius : Folds
TKM_18 : Raises for 0.40
gurra_g : Folds
pokerzp3 : Folds
Stoneburg : Calls for 0.40 [Ah] [Js]
FahQue05 : Folds
Joansi : Calls for 0.40
stoga : Folds
DeejayTiger : Folds

I don't normally call raises with AJo, but the raiser is very liberal with his preflop raises (pfr of 10+) and it's a miniraise.

Flop $1.50 [7s] [Ad] [Th]
------------------
TKM_18 : Bets 0.20
Stoneburg : Calls for 0.20
Joansi : Calls for 0.20

Decent flop but obviously I am worried about my kicker. The normal thing to do here would be to raise his silly minibet and find out, but I figure that I'll find out on the turn anyway. Since there are no draws I don't mind giving a free card.

Turn $2.10 [Jc]
------------------
TKM_18 : Checks
Stoneburg : Bets 1.40
Joansi : Calls for 1.40
TKM_18 : Calls for 1.40

Sweet. Now I have top-two. He checks, so I figure he doesn't have the ace but maybe Joansi does. I Make a decent bet and both call. This is worrysome.

River $6.30 [Jh]
------------------
TKM_18 : Checks
Stoneburg : Bets 3.00
Joansi : Raises for 6.00
TKM_18 : Calls for 6.00
Stoneburg : Went all-in 30.85

Oh yes baby. The only hand that beats me is AA, which isn't totally impossible so I am a bit worried when I get miniraised AND called but I have Joansi on 77 or TT. I have no idea what TKM has... if he has AA, more power to him, but he sure doesn't play it like that. I decide against a normal raise, figuring that any hand strong enough to mini-raise with on the river like that will call an all-in.

Results later... and whoever can guess what hands these two have will get a cookie!

My novice guess:

TKM_18 = TT
Joansi = KQ

Uggg... I dont like the TT guess. But TKM is in check and call mode, so hes got a piece of the flop or he's slow playing the AA or he's just a tard.

Yes, I should have raised the flop. However, there are people playing even worse than me in this hand.

BOTH the other players have KQo. So one guy mini-raises KQ, another calls with it. I'd say both those are wrong. Then one guy mini-bets the flop with a gutshot, and another calls. Both wrong. Then they BOTH decide to slowplay when they hit the nut straight, über wrong. Finally one of them decides to mini-raise when the board pairs on the river, wrong, and they both call my all-in.

So bad play all around won me 4.5 buy-ins on this hand :D

I agree fully with ice, here. Giving the flop free card was not good at all.

I'm going to start a separate thread on a similar PF situation--to avoid hijacking (very important is to know your raiser).

I think the important thing for you to notice, is that you can add overs to your min-raise list for this guy.

Some people do this with AQ AJ AK others do it with Axs KJ KQ others any pair and suited connectors, and some are a combination of the above, and fewer but still worth noting do this with AA-TT, it is like they play limit hold'em in a NL game. This is one of the things I take notes on at the table and attempt to best utilize to my advantage, players that min-raise habitually do it with certain group of hands.

Figuring out what this raise means is vital to beating the tar out of them consistently. If you can start to narrow down that opponents criteria to a min-raise you can sometimes start to get cute and play back on the flop when it comes all low and you know they have overs, regardless of your hand, as long as they also aren't a complete calling station, you might have to fire twice against some that want to spike a card on the turn.
