AQ Hand

Postby Twelver » Tue Jun 28, 2005 8:40 am

Villan is typical TP A. I would like some comments from the experts on this hand.

$25 NL @ Empire. Villan and I have right around the buy in.

UTG+1 Raises to $1, Villan Calls, 1 fold, Hero calls in MP with [Ac] [Qc], everyone else folds.

Pot = $3.35
Flop [Qd] [9h] [4d].

UTG checks , Villan checks, Hero bets $1. (Probably should have bet more like the pot here???). UTG Folds, Villan calls.

Pot = $5.35
Turn [2c]

Villan checks, Hero bets $3. (Again is this too weak of a bet?), Villan calls.

Pot = $11.35
River [Ks]

Villan bets $5, Hero ?????

I will post results later.

Well, I don't think I'm "one of the experts" but here's my take. I'm not sure of your position preflop but if you were fairly late I personally would have raised preflop. I like to take control of hands preflop as it allows you to take down a lot of raggedy flops. Plus you get more action on your really strong hands. That being said, I don't think limping is necessarily a bad play

On the flop, yes bet more, I would probably bet the pot here. You have the dimond draw out there and 10J is a typical hand that a lot of players love to see flops with. Plus a weaker Q is still going to call you. You have given every drawing hand odds to call.

On the turn, yes bet more. A lot of times after I bet the pot on the flop I will check behind on the turn with this hand, as it is less likely he called you with a flush draw. But I wouldn't have checked here on a pretty raggedy flop where all that really beats you is trips. As you played it, at this point you've got to throw a pot bet out there and see how much this guy really likes his hand. If he calls you can very likely put him on a Q as well and probably milk him for a value bet on the river. If he raises you there then you would have decision to make.

On the river, I'm not sure how I would handle it. If I had been playing it as strong as I suggested and then he leads into me when the K hits I may think about laying it down because it's likely he was on a Q and very possibly KQ or QJ. The way you played it I would probably call here as he may sense weakness and be representing the K. However, I expect he likely showed you KQ here.

Fold.

Either he slowplayed a set, hit his straight, or has KQ. Either way, you should be beaten. And yeah, you should bet the pot on the flop with TPTK when there's both a straight and flush draw out.

I think there's too many hands that beat you here, should be an easy fold. You should be betting a lot more on the flop with a flush and straight draw out there, you're giving really good odds for someone to call you down with a lot of hands.

Well I called and he flipped over [Jh] [Th] for the straight. Looking back, as usual you guys are all spot on. I gave him odds to draw on every street. I am still not so sure that he would lay it down even if I would have bet the pot. But at least I would not be giving him correct odds, and could say that I played it the correct way.

This shows why raising suited connectors can be a good play. You allowed him to win the hand ( I know you know that already).

Alot of people play just like you did. They call a raise with AQ. Flop TPTK. The raiser checks to them and they dont want the guy to fold. They want to get some more out of them so they slow play or bet too small. Thats why these plays work.

When you hit your perfect flop, bet it and bet it for real.

I wouldve bet $4 on the flop. he will probably still call. That makes the pot $11.35
Now you can bet $10 at the turn. He probbaly wont call and you win a decent pot. if he does call, you will make alot of money in the long run off this scenario even if he hits this one.

By the way, if you bet $4 on the flop and he check raises you, you need to fold. He will usually have AA or KK. If he has the cajones to check raise the flop with a draw, then you need to avoid him because hes plays GOOD.
