FWIW, after 15 years I'm @ 3 weeks vaca and have been getting 1 sick day per month that entire time. Accumulated sick time can not exceed 288 hours...after 288 hours you lose it. The bargaiing unit folks get the same but they can sell back their accumulated sick time at the end of the year (at their current wage). I'm no longer in the bargaining unit and can't sell back sick time so after accumulating a decent amount, I use all my sick time...at a rate of about 1 day per month (obv). PB (personal business) comes out of your sick time and can not exceed 36 hours per year.

My employer pays on the order of $10K per year for my medical insurance/coverage...and I'm a single, healthy man...no kids. Call it a tax, call it whatever you want but it's still $10K out of my pocket/paycheck per year just to have medical insurance. That's my money. And I still have to wait a month or more for an appointment to see a doctor. I don't like paying all that money just so the middleman (the insurance company) can literally make a fortune at everyone elses expense. But I'm sure the US Govt would fuck it up somehow too.

I have watched a couple of documentaries on how things function in Nordic countries, especially Sweden and every time I was really really impressed with the system.

I mean, if you are having a baby, a government send a truck to your house to give you all the necessary supplies so that you can care for the baby properly (I might have miswrote it a bit, but that's how I understood it). There are bunch of nice things about the Swedish system and I for one would be much happier if Croatian system would be anything like Swedish (with taxes and everything) but that's not gonna happen..

Btw. I read somewhere that Swedish govt invites foreigners to come to Sweden, learn the language in a year or so, and then govt gives them a place to stay (an apartment) and social benefits.. I guess they have to take the nationality then or something.. true? false? misinterpreted?
