Am I the fish in this one?

Postby shamdonk » Fri Jun 24, 2005 9:45 am

My read of BB is he is a maniac and likes to bluff. When he plays this hand a little slower then usual, I was quite confused.

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $0.25 BB (9 handed)

Hero ($46.55)
BB ($25.5)
UTG ($47.65)
UTG+1 ($37.88)
MP1 ($38.85)
MP2 ($25)
MP3 ($6.8)
CO ($8.65)
Button ($58.8)

Preflop: Hero is SB with [Kh], [As].
5 folds, CO raises to $1, 1 fold, Hero calls $0.90, BB calls $0.75.

Flop: ($3) [4d], [Ah], [5d] (3 players)
Hero bets $3, BB calls $3, CO folds.

Turn: ($9) [9h] (2 players)
Hero bets $6, BB raises to $12, Hero calls $6.

River: ($33) [3c] (2 players)
Hero checks, BB bets $9.5 (All-In), Hero calls $9.50.

Final Pot: $52

Results in white below:
Hero has Kh As (one pair, aces).
BB has 2d Jd (straight, five high).
Outcome: BB wins $52.

Shamrock,

You said he was a maniac but one of my rules against maniac is not go against them with TPTK. You need to wait for a monster and make them pay. they will be more respectful when they face you the next time. If you dont want them to be respectful you can type something like: MANIAC CONTAINED!!! after you hit him hard.

I think you overplayed TPTK against him. You wouldnt have called his bet if he wasnt a maniac. Remember that they DO get hands.

I think you played it pretty well and he got lucky. You gave him incorrect odds to draw to his 12 outs, and he chose to gamble. On the turn, you should either fold or raise all in, I assume you're not planing to fold to a bet on the river given the pot odds so there's no point in calling. He is forced to call with almost all his money in the pot, and you won't get that money if he misses his draw. You need to put him all-in on the turn.

By giving your opponent incorrect odds and playing your good hand aggresively, you should win enough to make up for the times when you're outdrawn.

I think the best play here would have been to re-raise preflop LARGE and isolate yourself against the second smallest stack on the table. There are alot of hands the small stack would open with a raise and try to steal blinds; particularly when he has position on most of the table. This is a perfect opportunity to get into a heads-up situation when you likely have your opponent dominated.

I think you played it properly up to the turn. You should have bet the pot on the turn and force him to a decision. By betting 2/3 pot you showed some weakness and he tried to push you off your hand. Also, there were 2 flush draws and a str8 draw on the board so even pushing on the turn was justified to try to wiin the pot right then and there.
My 2 cents.
