Deposited $87 on full-tilt, how long til I'm broke?

Postby rookieboy » Wed Dec 05, 2007 6:48 am

Hey all,

Having deposit twice online before in the last 18 months ($100USD and $200USD) and going busto, I decided to deposit $87USD ($100AUD) on full-tilt and attempt to grind out some sort of a bankoll so I don't have work as much. The thing is, I am pretty sure I'm a winning player, since I basically tripled my BR over about a month on both occasions before I just made some stupid decisions and went broke. IThe factors that brought about my downfall were:
1. Lack of patience - I started out 2 tabling which produced decent results but was pretty boring, especaillywhen I was playing 0.05/0.10 NL. So I started playing up to 4 tables and making some loose calls even though I knew they were wrong at the time. I guess when you are only playing for $10-$20 at a time it's pretty tempting to gamble.
2. Playing too much - This just killed me in the end. I started out playing about 3 hours a day or so for the first two months, then once I started winning I figured that playing more and more would see me rise up the limits quicker. Huge mistake. Playing more than 5 hours a day was't a good idea becase my decisions started to suffer as a result.
3. Playing above my bankroll - This is a problem for a lot of people, but when my BR was $200 I shouldn't have been playing $0.1/0$0.25 I don't think. It probably didn't matter that much though since I would've gone bust anyhow.

So, having learnt from my prior mistakes Iam now attempting to become a winning online poker player. My knowledge is pretty good as I've done a fair amount of reading and have been playing for a while now. My brother is a winning 5/10 NL player who I have watched on occasion and he has taught me some things, so hopefully I can apply those concepts this time around. Also, I have decided that rather than playing cash games, to start out I will play $5 SNGs because I'm told that my tournament play is a lot etter than my cash play.

Feel free to write in any words of advice

Poker is silly.

It is not enough to be good at chess, you must also play well.

Well my results so far are encouraging. I played 15 $5 + $0.50 SNGs last night and one-tabled $0.05/$0.10 NL for about 20 minutes.

Profit: $53.10
Hours: 4
Hourly profit: $13.28

I would post HHs but tournaments are hardly interesting viewing. I have thoroughly enjoyed the "log" posts above...(N). A littlle weird, even for me.

Well over the last day or so I'v played about 25 SNGs without too much success. I have lost $3 despite playing quite well, which is pretty frustrating. I'm now actually going into hands with a plan, which is working out for me. I haven'treally played any interesting hands except for the following.

I decided to check the flop there because there was an overcard and I thought he might CRAI and I'd be in a really bad spot. Please post comments.

If you check the flop I think you should check the turn too. Basically, by betting there, you are representing the king. Over-representing your hand isn't usually a good idea when your hand is also probably the best hand.

If the blinds were 50/100 I think shoving PF would be best - as it is, I think it's kind of close but your raise is probably better than a shove. Either way, it's close.

River is definitely correct.

Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.

Ok, well seeing as I have't updated this in a while, I figured that I'd make a small post now. I've decided I want to play poker forthe sole purpose of paying for travelling. I want to go to Canada at the end of next year and decided that if I keep working at Coles and earn even 1-2k from poker this year it'd take a lot of strain off that.

Let's just say I am running really bad, like horribly. I thought I was just playing bad until I discovered PokerEv software, which is pretty helpful, especially for tilt. See below. Keeping in mind that's just for cash games, in tournaments I am possibly running een worse, but since I have no quantitative proof to show you my SNG record, I won't bother discussing anything but cash. The period where I ran worst was from hand 1800 to hand 2300, which was just so brutal, not only on my BR but my confidence. A friend kindly let me $80 to get HUD and PT and I will repay him out of my rakeback on Pacific. PT and HUD are so ridiculously helpful, particularly when dealing with bluffs from loose players. My BR currently sit at $151.50 (meaning I am down a total of $15.50 since starting). I'm not worried, according to Sklansky I should be +$92 in cash games and I would estimate I should be +$50 from SNGs. I'm starting to run a little bit better over the last 500 hands, so lets hope for the best.
