how about the heat and water molecules make the nasal passages more sensitive..........does nothing to the oder, bt enhances your ability to sense it.
I have no sense of smell so i am totally guessing on this.

The rising steam both increases the flow of the "fart" particles as well as their ability to adhere in your nose so the smell is more intense.
