Got Bluffed off This One

Postby Tiburon » Wed Jun 08, 2005 7:36 am

Couldn't believe this guy pulled this off on me. I played it weakly, so I deserved it:

$25NL @ Ultimate Bet: (converter not working)
Hero is at seat 0 with $42.75.
MP is at seat 1 with $7.80.
MP2 is at seat 2 with $11.35.
LP is at seat 3 with $13.05.
CO is at seat 5 with $23.65.
Button is at seat 6 with $10.60.
SB is at seat 7 with $44.20.
Sit Out Player is at seat 8 with $47.20.
BB/Villain is at seat 9 with $21.75.

SB posts the small blind of $.10.
Villain posts the big blind of $.25

Hero is dealt [Th] [Qd]

Pre-flop:
Hero calls. 5 folds. SB calls. Villain checks.

Flop [Td] [6c] [3d]

SB checks. Villain bets $.25. Hero raises to $.95. SB folds. Villain re-raises to $1.65. Hero calls.
I played this weakly because I had him on AT or an overpair. I, however, remember that he was in the BB, so I felt that a call here was best for my decent, but vulnerable hand.

Turn (board: [Td] [6c] [3d]) [3s]

Villain bets $4.05. Hero calls.
This can't help him now unless he has TT or A3. I could already be drawing dead, so the pot-sized bet makes me wonder. I'm also hoping that the smooth call may slow him down a bit

River (board: [Td] [6c] [3d] [3s]) [2h]

Villain bets $12.15. Hero folds.
Now I'm up against back-to-back-to-back pot sized bets. I didn't improve so I figured I was beat from the start. I lay it down.

Villain's cards shown below in white.

Villain held T4o.

Flame away. I gave away $5.95 and laid down the best hand. It absolutely nauseated me to do that. Besides the obvious re-raise strategy (ie. not playing like a drunken muppet), is there anything else I could have done to avoid the mess? The table as a whole was exceptionally passive, and I had been running it over for the last half hour or so, as my stack would attest to. I was winning the majority of pots uncontested, and when I did win a big pot, I showed down monsters each time (flopped Broadway straight and flopped trip Jacks, turned full house). All this guy did was take my aggression on the flop and play it back at me. Grrrr.

You could have made your original raise a little larger and then if you got reraised I would have laid it down. As it stands his little min-reraise is hard to get away from so as you know, I think your best options there are to reraise again or fold. If you reraise you probably win the hand but if wanted to continue his bluff and get aggressive there then you have to get away from the hand. However, since you called and let him take the initiative in the hand I think you just have to fold to that turn bet. If the stacks were deeper you could have possible raised that turn bet and get a good read where you are at in the hand.

This guy is the BB and got a free look at the flop, he could have just as easily been sitting on 63os. I don't blame you for folding, but you probably should've done it on the turn. It happens, you're going to fold the best hand sometimes, he's the idiot for betting that large with TPNK, he'll get broke playing like that, you should put him on your buddy list! :D

I really can't fault your fold to that river bet. There is no way you can call there unless you have a solid read on your man. The key to this hand is the turn play. You cannot simply call this bet. You either have to fold or raise in my opinion. You have position in this hand, and you needed to use it. However I think a strong argument can be made for folding rather than raising there. There are very few hands you beat, and you have virtually no draw, so you could be well behind. However if you think you have the best hand at this point, I would put in a decent sized raise... oh, and your flop raise just stinks. Not sure what you hoped to accomplish with such a small raise, but it failed. Make it $2 to go, then he has to add $1.75 if he want to min-re-raise you.

Fold on the flop, after the reraise.

Let me explain. You don't have any idea what he holds...and you don't know what you want to hit. Maybe a queen..so that's 3 outs.

If you're gonna be calling a raise like this..try to have outs to back you up.
