OK, sorted out an Ipoker account at NoIQ with $500 bonus and some RB (tag is 'AardvarkAttack' if anyone cares).

Played 1300 hands short-stacking the $100 6 max tables so far (4-6 at once - I can play 8-9 on my big monitor upstairs but mouseless with the laptop balanced on the arms of my sofa 6 is about max). It has taken just under 4 hours and I've earned my orange VIP status for 1500+FPP's points there (hopefully for next month)

PokerEv tells me I am running hot and that the expected EV is about 4PTBB/100.

I have never short-stacked before so it has been a fascinating experience for me so far.

I have noticed a few things that will lead me to adapt my play (the great thing about short-stacking is that you play so many hands with relatively little at stake that you can try out new tactics and see if they work cheaply and easily):

First is that when I am re-raised pre-flop it is almost always a premium hand (Big Pair or AK). People don't seem to 3 bet shorties light much.
Secondly the bread and butter +EV play of the short stack is to push over the top in a raised pot pre-flop with a decent hand (preferably by squeezing a loose-ish raiser and a cold caller) and that you should adapt your pre-flop play to try to maximise the chances of doing this.
The first one militates against making big raises as it gives me a chance to get away when I do run into a premium hand (very few players smooth call pre-flop with a big hand as they assume once I open I'm pot-committed).
The second suggests that you should limp a lot if you have aggro raisers behind. This may mean limping almost everyhting in EP and maybe even some hands in CO.

I have also noticed that because of the lack of the implied threat of the money behind (and no doubt the donkey image) short-stackers CB's don't get much respect (and if you fire a 4BB PFR and CB you are pot-committed more or less).



So I think I will drop the 1/3 stack PFR raises from EP (I still think they may be OK when I am SB). The ides is that they leave you a stack sized push on the flop acting first and that the villain can't call unless he has hit. This is true and they do work 2/3 of the time. But when they work you pick up 8BB, when they lose you lose 20BB+ unless you have or make a better hand by SD. From EP they also run much higher risk of running into a monster than if you keep them as an SB weapon, so that's where the 6BB raises are going to stay I think.

The alternative in EP is to limp and look to come over the top of a later raiser. Unless the raiser is very tight I'm prepared to do this with any pair, AK and usually AQ. AJ, KQ etc is going to be table dependent. The reason for doing it with any pair is that they are three times more likely to be raising an non-pair and the fold equity and 6.5+ BB's in the pot make a push +EV IMHO. OK sometimes this will lead to playing limped pots with premium hands but with 20-30BB's even a limped pot can be built up to your stack size pretty easily if another player has a piece of the flop.

In CO and OTB I have been raising 2-4BB's (yes I min raise tight blinds). I think I may try to move this to around 2.5BB's so I can get away cheaply if re-raised and a CB won't pot commit me. Just bet enough to take the lead and force out junk and leave me with aenough behind for my positional advantage to mean something post-flop.

From SB I think I keep the 6xBB raise if I play.
In a blind battle I may reduce with to 2.5-3 or so.

From BB in a blind battle if SB completes I auto-raise 3BB with any two (I have position).
Otherwise it's just see a free flop and see what happens.
