And the equity changes dramatically on a clean turn card, which was my initial reason to wait for the turn (reminds me of an important concept in Limit cash-games: when to wait for the turn to raise - I imagine it differs in NL though). However, here he doesn't need to have a club draw. He could just have AX without a club, in which case we are far ahead on the flop.

That's right. And if another club comes on the turn, you could be bluffed off the best hand, or he will be afraid to put more money in the pot whereas on the flop he probably would've.
