A math oriented street fighting question.

To start the thread I will ask a simple question that I've been fooling around with in my mind recently. If enough people care and/or give input we can extrapolate it to similar and slightly more complex cases.

There are 3 men. Man A, Man B, and Man C.

All three men have a 50% chance of beating one another in a street fight.

What odds does Man A (arbitrary) of winning a fight against Man B AND Man C at the same time.

I think we can all agree there is virtually no chance that it's over 25%, unless Man B and C are Larry and Curly. I think most people will also assume that the answer is below 25% (I of course agree).

Assume that the sole fighter has no specific training for fighting multiple attackers at once, and the duo has no specific training for fighting with a 2 vs. 1 advantage.

Extrapolating:

Also 1 vs. 3?

1 vs. one man he is 75% to beat and one he is 25% to beat?

What odds does man A need of beating B and C individually, to be a favorite over them collectively?

Two guys beat the crap out of one guy 98.6% of the time. I would take sub zero that freeze attack is awsome.

Realistically I would guess that the chance is Lim ---> Zero

Now being normal sized I can easily pick two friends that I would have ~50% chance of beating one on one (this may be hard for Xas unless you include girls <13 years, and they can have really sharp nails...). However, I find it really hard to imagine me beating them both at the same time.

5% maybe?

the advantage of the first strike is rather big, but knowing that A vs. B has same chance as B vs. C or A vs. C, this would also mean that if A would fight B and C and managed first strike on B, there would be a quick retaliation strike from C that will allow B to stabilize and then together they would kick A's ass...

if A strikes B and succeeds in his 50% chance to KO him and thus beat him, and C strikes A and misses on his 50% chance, A has again equal chance to beat C cause B is out of the picture..

something like that, huh? Image
