If your router is near a speaker as well this can cause a wave interference. Try the router in different spots.
We know through experimenting that it's not the router itself, the cable/DSL signal, or a setting on the laptop. That leaves pretty much the idea of some other type of interference.
When I was troubleshooting I never paid much attention to the speaker/phone interference problem. However I had the issue happen about a week ago ... moving my router away from the PC's subwoofer resolved it.
We know through experimenting that it's not the router itself, the cable/DSL signal, or a setting on the laptop. That leaves pretty much the idea of some other type of interference.

My understanding is that he has replaced the router already.
I would try hooking the computer up via ethernet to the router. If that works well then that indicates the router is should be working well. Then you should update drivers on your wireless card/adapter.
