Have you ever been in a fight?

Postby Xaston » Thu Apr 05, 2007 1:25 am

I've never been a real fight before. I've boxed with some friends and also had scuffles with a few of them when we'd get pissed off enough at each other. But I've never been in a both people punching each other in the face as hard as possible/kneeing/etc. fight.

A part of me has always wanted to get in one (more so in high school when I was in shape and boxed a little so I would have probably won).

The closest I probably ever came was in like my junior year of High School my neighbors Dan and Ryan were over. Ryan was being a dickhead and one thing lead to another and we were in some sort of heated wrestling thing. All I can remember is falling short (haha I'm short blah blah blah) on a takedown attempt (I think) and then pushing him into the kitchen. The fight ended with me smacking his face into my phone. Dan was in the living room the whole time and saw it start, then saw us go into the kitchen at which point he could no longer see us. Then he heard what sounded like someone hanging up the phone very loudly and me walking back into the living room with a smirk on my face and Ryan coming in about 40 seconds later with a dejected look on his now red (not bloody) face. He found this pretty humorous.

Please state your age and whether or not you have ever been in a fight. If you have been in multiple fights please state how many. If you feel so inclined leaving a synopsis of the fight like I did with my not-quite-a-fight-fight above would be spectacular as well.
Boy, you got me confused with a man who repeats himself.

No fights since high school. One guy was biting the cards as a mark. He was a big guy that kept picking on a little guy. I said, "If anybody is going to be doing any fighting around here, it will be me." He knocked me down and hit me two or three times in my right eye which was black and injured for months.

Around gambling, everybody knew I was not a tough guy but I did "carry the difference."

I managed a band and ran a tough legendary road house called the Cotton Club. Elvis even got punched out there. Some fights had hurt our business. I fired a couple of rounds from my twenty-five automatic over the heads of the crowd one night. The band kept on playing. Naturally, no one called the law. Texas has some silly law about the discharge of firearms where alcohol is consumed. Folks didn't act too tough toward me after that.

A great thing about getting old is you don't have to act tough in West Texas. I never, ever was a tough guy. I was in the brain end of it, not the muscle end of it.

The only "fight" I ever got in was decidedly 1-sided A friend of mine and I were on a high school track and field trip in Toronto. As we were 14 at the time we thought it would be cool to go sneaking out of our hotel and wander around the streets at night. Great idea. We cut through a schoolyard and were surrounded by a TO young punk street gang. They separated us ... threw me to the ground, broke something over the back of my head and took my money. I sprinted my ass back to the hotel and called police. I had no idea where my friend was but he did make it back okay ... in a bit better shape then I was in. I wound up sitting with my supervising teacher in the hospital until 4 in the morning for them to fix me up. It looked a lot grislier than it was ... as head wounds bleed massively. It looked like the top of me had taken a blood shower ... the top of my shirt was soaked and there was blood all the way down to my waist in parts.

Within 2-3 weeks I was into shotokan karate. (The only type offered in my small town at the time.) When I moved to the city a couple of years later I enrolled in kenpo, which is a pretty wicked little martial art. I continued training in kenpo for about 7 years.

I've never had a problem since. I've busted up quite a few fights since then. I've got a stupid hero complex which causes me to throw myself in when I see trouble brewing or someone about to get hurt. This has been a little scary from time to time ... knowing how to handle yourself doesn't ensure that you're not going to get hurt ... and it doesn't ensure that you're a better fighter than the other guy. I would say though that I've interjected myself into over a dozen situations and been able to defuse them all from becoming violent. The most recent was a couple of weeks ago in Niagara Falls ... I was walking back to my hotel room at about 3AM from the casino ... there was a crowd of rowdies in front of a hotel along the way and it looked like they were about to pop into a brawl. I (cautiously) made my way up to the edge ... there were a couple other sobers there to help, and I was able to split one of the antagonizers off from the others ... assuage the guys ego a bit (yes you could kick his ass ... I know that ... you know that ... we don't need to prove it ... blah blah blah.) and the whole thing ended.

I could go on about my theories on violence but I think it's safe to say that I hate that shit, and made the decision a long time ago to work against it. I would fight if I felt I had to at the time, but I've always been able to settle things without it. It helps to be able to see a little deeper and understand what's actually going on when tensions are running high. It feels better to me knowing that I do this not because I can't handle myself ... but because I can choose whether I want to do it that way or not.

Ice is right, most fights go to the ground pretty quickly.

I used to get in a lot of fights in grade school, usually me and a friend against 6 or more others. After I topped 6 feet people stopped messing with me though.

The only one I got into as an adult my not qualify for you.

My buddy was recovering from having his guts pulled out and cleaned after his appendix burst and he got paratinitus (sp?). He still had some open wounds but was feeling healthy enough to go out.

We were at this bar, he was standing behind a wall out of my sight but I here him exchanging words with some hick. The guy tosses a punch at my friend and I charged him from about 20 feet away. I am 6'3" and was probably 240 or so at the time, I gave him a good shove when I got close and sent him flying into the corner. The guy was about 6' or so him self but pretty skinny. I was startled, and I told him to stay in the corner. He took a step towards me and I grabbed him by the throat, brought him into a head look and tried to toss him on the ground.

I couldn't get him down, and I couldn't figure out how he was resting me. I had him completely off balance and my feet were firmly planted. I finally realize that I am actually banging his head into the corner of the wall. I move over a little bit and flip him to the ground and pin him on his said and I say "now fucking relax!"

He just lays there with his eyes wide open like a deer caught in the headlights when a bouncer grabs me and tosses me off of him onto the wall. As I am up against the wall this leather clad arm reaches in and snatches me away from the bouncer and drags me outside. It is this biker looking dude that used to sell us pot and buy us beer when we were in high school. He hussled us out to the parking lot and we took off.

Some girls I knew where there and the guy went around telling people that I hit him with a beer bottle.

I really didn't mean to hurt the guy, I was just trying to get him away from my friend.

I had a couple of close calls but that is that was about the worst of it.

There was another one that was kind of funny to me that happened when I was in Portland at a Cherry Poppin' Daddies show.

These two wannabes were walking through the crowd slamming side to side into everyone as they went. They weren't "punks" they were trendie little assholes.

as they approached me and my wife I leaned away from one of them right as he went to slam into me. He lost ballance and fell on me and I pushed back and sent him flying the other direction.

He came back and told me how he was gonna kick my ass and how I better get going. I just glared down at him. He turned around and saw that his buddy was gone, then he looked over at the guy next to me. I had never talked the this guy before, but he was just looking down at this little creep with a look that said "come on, hit him... give me a reason" He turned around and left.

I had a few close calls at the age of 15-18.
Once four guys of about my age cornered me with very serious intentions, they probably wanted to entertain themselves. I managed to run out getting only a few blows.
Another one involved a long talk with two guys in an isolated place, one of them had a knife, fortunately they weren't too serious about the whole thing. ( There were many other instances mostly involving a couple of guys asking for money with a threat of a fight, but the most one could get was a couple of blows on the face. )

After I got older I learned to avoid these situations, a little experience and thought and you can see the threat. Often a look into the eyes is sufficient to understand what to expect.

Be glad your opponents refuse to fold; if they didn't, you just might go broke.
