food poisoning (disturbing level of detail)

Postby Ojingo » Sun Mar 04, 2007 6:22 pm

Abstract: got very sick the other day and quickly blamed the chicken livers. However, looking back I'm not so sure.

Last Thursday I was struck by what I casually diagnosed as food poisoning; I woke up earlier than usual and feeling very nauseous. I could barely make it to the washroom, and from then on I was stuck in the following pattern:

- vomit like there was no tomorrow
- lie on bed, feel relatively relieved in stomach for 5 mins
- period of about 20-30 mins during which feelings of nausea, dizzyness and stomach cramp gradually increased, until the cycle repeated itself.

This lasted for about 7hours; after the first few times my stomach was of course, apart from a little water which I tried to drink, completely empty, so the remaining 8 or so vomiting sessions were rather painful and aimless displays of antiperistaltic impotence.

After cycle 3 things also collapsed on the other end, and (at least according to my wife) the highlight of the day was a simultaneous diarrhea/vomiting act.

After 10 cycles the frequency went down quickly, and by the end of the day I was exhausted but at least no longer nauseous.

I automatically blamed the chicken livers I ate the night before, although they tasted fine. We even threw the remaining ones out (my wife was out that night so didn't eat them). However, looking back on everything I'm starting to doubt whether it was really authentic food poisoning or some combination of other things:

1) I had food poisoning before, and typically it kicked in about 3 hours after eating. This took the whole night.
2) Moreover, it lasted for about 36 hours, albeit less intense.
3) This time I already had a bad cold and some flu symptoms.
4) This time I ate liver, which I rarely eat.

So, maybe it could be that my body was simply not tolerating that type of food at that particular moment? Or are there different types of food poisoning with different reactions in the body?

Any thoughts or comments are welcome. Also, what is the best way to get rid of these things asap? The pharmacist recommended drinking Gatorade, but that was too sweet for me at the time.

Food poisoning.

I'd also throw out any fish you ate yesterday. Chicken is a massive culprit of food poisoning (which is why it shouldn't be reheated, should be chopped using separate utensils to e.g. salad, shouldn't be kept in the fridge too long etc). I'd have thought chicken livers would be potentially even worse. Be careful about where you buy your chicken and how long you keep it, and be sure to always chop or prepare raw chicken completely separately from other food.

Def. food poisoning.

Different types of food poisoning have different incubation periods and different reactions, so your 3 hour window fits quite easily. Don't know which type of food poisoning this is, it'll depend on what caused it. What else did you eat or drink, and how was it prepared? Your answer will be in there.
