Live Play--Asking Questions for a Read (1/2 FR)

Postby T-Rod » Tue Jan 02, 2007 10:33 pm

This question is for those guys who play live alot. I want to know what a person looks for when they ask a question in this situation.

You have 9[d] 9[h] and raise in MP. LP calls. He's pretty loose and decent postflop. He'll call raises with a SC. You have seen him bluff at weakness before. You both have full stacks.

Flop 8[h] J[h] 2[c]. You pot your CB and he calls.

Turn rag. Ck/ck.

River rag. You ck, he bets near the pot. You've seen him bluff before with a missed FD and he bet about this much. Regardless of this hypothetical hand, you feel you could be ahead or behind here and want info.

So you ask him, "So, do you have a hand?"

What are you looking for in his reaction? Do you basically go with weak=strong and vice versa. Quiet = strong?

As useless as this reply will be to you, it just all depends. I talk a fair amount when I'm playing live if the players will give me something to work with and there isn't really anything specific. It's just an experience thing, and unfortunately, it varies from player to player. The best thing you can do is try to get people to talk when you already have a pretty good idea where they stand, and put their responses in the memory bank. Plus it'll make them think that you aren't so great at reading hands, and perhaps give you less credit on furture hands. The only real advice I can give is that I always ask myself, "Is there a reason why he said or did that? Was it acting or natural? What does it mean?"

One of the beliefs is that a person who is bluffing won't be able to carry on a casual conversation without seeming 'forced' or 'strained'. Of course they don't have to answer you. I expect this works best with someone who doesn't talk much at the table and then responds to your question. Maybe live players should become expert in FACS if they play high enough?
