$20NL 6-max @ Tribeca

im guiding a friend of mine through the basics of how NL hold 'em works. we're alternating between him playing and me playing. @ Tribeca the buyin at low-stakes tables is actually 200bb. so we're sitting with $40 here. i dropped down to low stakes for this so that i can leave him alone with my money and not have him lose a lot of it.

family limped pot, i play from the SB with [Jd].

flop: [3d][2s]
pot: $1.20

checks to CO who bets 60 cents. i decide to donk it up and call. BB calls too. he's a big stack....$52 or so. i have $40.

turn:
pot: $3

check, check, CO bets $1. i CR to $4. BB calls, CO folds.

river:
pot: $11

i think for a bit and overbet shove for my whole stack.

thoughts?

Floating to hit a DRAW OOP is generally stupid...sure you may hit TP...but it's very likely that he could hit TWO PAIR if you do...

In position in a family pot I think it would be fine at Tribeca. It's hard to get people off their hands there, so the value of top pair etc goes down and drawing hands goes up, especially 200BB deep. I'd be playing this mainly for the FD and OESD, though.

OOP it's dubious at best, nasty at worst. I'm not keen on the massive overbet shoving either, unless you have a read.

Is this really a guide through the basics of NLHE? I think these sort of plays are likely to confuse a newcomer.

it's fine to complete from the SB with QJs (+1.22PTBB/hand over my last 20k hands $100-$400 NL 6 max) but on the flop the donk call with weak overcards, OOP and not even a flush draw to represent is exactly what you should be teaching a new NL player not to do.

The first book simple poker book I read said not to put any more money in the pot without at least top pair, decent kicker or a good draw - for playing the $20 games at Beca this still must be sound advice - anything else is dreadfully fancy play.

If you want to intrduce the concept of bluffing I would limit it to when you are last to act on a two tone flop with one or two others in who have both checked to you.

If you want to introduce the concept of floating I would wait until you have AK overcards or a medium pair or weak draw in position and are able to represent a flush draw if the turn allows you to do so and the bettor slows down ahead (as even donks notice when a caller reps a made flush on the turn or river)

Teaching a newbie concepts like bluffing with air and floating is just asking for trouble without very very strict guidelines on when it should be done.

Overbetting the river is fine, but 3X the pot? The guys going to have to be a complete idiot to call that with the nuts.

I like a bet of $15 or $9. A push seems dumb to me this deep.

i guess i posted this basically for some public humiliation. after the turn CR i felt there was a good chance that villain had a flush draw.

unfortunately it was [2d] and i got to look like a massive idiot.
