Poker on a resume

Postby DaveRed » Tue Dec 26, 2006 4:39 pm

I haven't a job the past 2 summers cause I can easily make more playing poker... however this doesn't look too good on a resume, I figure most people will think of this as "gambling". Anyway I'm looking for an internship this summer and trying to make up a resume, what should I list it as?
Professional Investor?
Risk Management?
Statistical Investment Analysis?
I want something that sounds good so the companies will understand why I haven't been working (last summer I made $10k...hard to do that at a job like 7/11).

What kind of job are you applying for and will there be an interview?

I've often wondered about this too. This could be a problem for a lot of 20-30 somethings if online poker collapses in the US. Even if it wasn't looked at so badly, anybody can just put poker on their resume and it can't be verified at all really.

Private Online Equity Investing and Risk Management (Thankyou ED!).
Poker is silly.

It is not enough to be good at chess, you must also play well.

I had this same question a while ago. I was eventually told to just not list it.

Because of this, I was told I needed ANY sort of job (not much available at UCLA unless you're considered in need of financial aid and get work/study) so I ended up getting a job at Wetzel's Pretzel's to show I could both work and study on future resume's.

I've been told by many people this was really smart and will pay off in the future, while all my poker playing friends say it's retarded and a lot of people who know I'm baller and it's not for the money also think getting the job was pointless.. Does anyone know if getting some random job which isn't going to be related to my major is actually helpful or if there's just no point?

Sorry for the hijack but I'm really curious about this as well and wondering if anyone has some advice.

Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.

I am in the same postion as you are. I had a job pretty much from age 15-25, then I got into UCSD, realized I could make a lot more money playing poker and since CSE is a free time black hole I could work when I had free time. I decided I am just going to exclude it from my resume, no one needs to know what I was doing. If someone asks I will tell the truth and to be honest I think that with a good explantaion it actually makes you sound intelligent and self motivator which is 2 very important things in the CS field.

SO theres no one that thinks that poker is acceptable/interesting enough to put on a resume these days? I mean i dunno, i havent had to fill out a real resume since i started playin poker seriously- but i know a couple of girls who got 'real' jobs that admitted to having been 'exotic dancers' *ahem* and they actually managed to get decent jobs-- of course theyre girls, with titties, and stuff, so they mightve gottenem easier. However, i know a coule of professional mizors that recently 'went straight' and got jobs with like mortgage companies and shit, so i'll askem and post my findins-- like many of you im interested in this also...
