BTW, I love the way this article says the poll was conducted for the "left-leaning Guardian newspaper", as if to imply that the results have obviously been doctored by dirty Commie bastards. Hilarious.

I would agree with that statement to an extent. While I think religion DOES do more harm than good, I DO NOT think that getting rid of it would change anything... a couple "holy wars" would just change into wars for territory, goods, freedom, etc.

ah yes - the bias is in the fact that it's a poll taken outside the US...

We sat and watched the Northern Irish Catholics and Protestants go at each other for 100 years of pointless tit for tat killing including the Catholics bombing us in the UK mainland; the next terrorists to come along and bomb us are home grown Muslim fundies.

Most of us couldn't give a toss whether the person next door is atheist, catholic, protestant, jew, sikh, hindu, buddhist, or muslim - and frequently we don't know - I simply had no clue at school who was atheist, jew, catholic or protestant - I could probably spot the sikhs (turbans) but wouldn't differentiate muslim and hindu.

The established Church of England is so wishy-washy that they failed to sack a vicar who declared that he didn't believe in God anymore. It's about as far away from a fundamentalist religion as It's possibe to get.

Amongst the educated middle classes atheism is probably running at about 75% - and all I have to say about that, if you'll pardon the pun, is 'thank God'...
