Anything goes - Whiskey recommendations

Postby Felonius_Monk » Mon Dec 11, 2006 1:26 pm

Hey folks

I've decided to invest in a couple of bottles of very good whiskey for christmas (have some friends coming round for new year so it could come in useful!).

I used to be a bit of a whiskey connoiseur a few years back and would hunt down some good single malts now and again, but I haven't had a nice whiskey for ages (I don't buy it in pubs/bars because the usual blends and stuff they have are pretty poor and anything decent in a specialist bar is pretty ridiculously expensive outside of scotland).

I'm a scot by birth so I only really drink scotch, I don't like bourbon much although a good irish whiskey is fine. I like fruity, peaty whiskies with a very smooth/soft edge to them. For anyone into scotch, this is my all-time favourite I've tasted http://www.whiskymag.com/whisky/brand/g ... ky601.html

I'm pretty flexible in price, anything up to £50 ($100) a bottle is OK, would have to be something pretty special to pay more though. Bear in mind I live in England so I don't have to pay the shipping that you yanks will for a great scotch (i.e. if it costs you $100 it'll probably be available to me for less).

Oban is one of the best Scot's malts, IMO. For Irish, go for Bushmills or Jameson's.

F[]ck it, go for all 3.

I haven't had it but I've heard good things about Crown Royal XR....Pricey from what I understand $140-ish USD seems about average.

Another which isn't bad is called Knob Creek.

I'm not a whiskey connoiseur at all, personally JD will do just fine for me. I've tried JD Single Barrel but in a blind test over ice I doubt I would be able to tell the difference.

Be glad your opponents refuse to fold; if they didn't, you just might go broke.

I have a Seat. That's like a European Ford. Except we have Fords here too. They're like American Seats. Or something.
