Tough Philosophical Question

Postby LetsGetItCrunk » Thu Nov 30, 2006 9:26 pm

Heres the Premise :

We think we are acting for someone elses sake but it turns our that we are always acting for our own self interest.

Can you think of any examples or counter examples to discredit this ? It seems illogical to me that no counter examples exist, yet so far I cant think of any. Now remember to think about this from all aspects. Say for instance you say : I am playing poker, My girlfriend comes home and makes me go see a shitty ass movie with her. You dont want to do this and it seems you are sacrificing your enjoyment for her, yet you really benefit from it because she will be happier with you and you wont feel guilty.

Any Ideas ? :?

I do not believe in altruism. I don't think it can exist in the human animal. Even Mother Teresa was doing what she was doing in her own self-interest. The best we can hope for is what I call Enlightened Self-Interest.

I do what I do for my own best interest. If I think before I do, and it's impact does not cause more harm to others than it does me good, which in the long run would do me more harm than good, then I'm practicing Enlightened Self-Interest.

Rarely does the long term outweigh the short-term, for most people. They'll take the short term gain without thinking of the consequences. The Enlightenment part is in short supply.
