Question for Europeans on DVDs

Postby Aisthesis » Sun Oct 15, 2006 4:46 am

I have been really aggravated here in the U.S. that foreign films typically aren't dubbed. I almost think it's a racket designed to increase Hollywood's stranglehold on the movie market because it just makes it much less fun to watch the movie if you don't understand the language and have to stare at the subtitles to catch the dialogue.

So, anyhow, I was at the video store and ran across a DVD of a few Godard movies I really like--namely San Souffle (Breathless) and Je vous salue, Marie (Hail Mary). But, alas, both were with subtitles and my French isn't good enough that I'd really want to turn the subtitles off.

My question, then, is whether in Europe you can get dubbed versions of (for me) foreign films and, if they exist, if there's a website where you can order them at a reasonable price.

I'd also even find German dubbings acceptable, as I'm fluent there, but English would be better because essentially none of my friends would be able to watch the German versions (I do know that the Germans are pretty good about dubbing movies rather than just throwing subtitles on them--was really fun when I lived over there to see John Wayne speaking German).

Are the British just as bad as the Americans in terms of sticking with subtitles rather than offering real English-language versions of foreign movies? If not, it would be really cool to find someplace maybe out of Britain where I could order like French, German, Swedish (Seventh Seal was also in the store and very tempting), Italian, Japanese, Russian, etc. but in English versions!!! (without subtitles)

er - sorry to be a film snob but subtitling is a much better way of watching a movie than seeing a dubbed one

especially in beautiful languages like french or mandarin

why listen to some voice actor ruining the flow of the movie and making it look like the lip--synching has gone off? the only exception is cartoons - Spirited Away for example is really good dubbed

lol sick

Dubbing is vile and perverted.

However, I understand that Germans dub like everything so if you google in German I'm sure you'll come up with lots of German stores selling dubbed films.

I have to agree that subtitling is abhorrent.

If you like Godard films then you must be a full ring NL player. BTW, have you seen Weekend?

Yeah, I loved Weekend--really, I've never seen a Godard I didn't like, and I've seen a fair number, although certainly not all. Did pick up his more recent Forever Mozart, which is about the war in Bosnia and really well done.

Maybe the only solution would be to find someplace where I can find them dubbed into German and then alternatively switch to the original language.
