I want to say it has something to do with WW 2 and the atomic bombs.

The 2 secret objects are the 2 bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki (the 10,000 faces in the darkness are people in Japan.

The man who thought he was in charge was the President worried about the effects of what wa sabout to happen.

No, not Barenboim.
No, nothing to do with WW2, nor Japan.
EVERY clue in the original story is important...any could lead you toward the solution.
There COULD be a Raleigh you don't know about. 8-)
