Back a few years, when we (that is the UK and Ireland) lost the Ryder cup every time we drafted in the rest of Europe to the team.

It's bizarre the US ALWAYS have the best golfers but always seem to lose. If it's got something to do with the European team spirit it would seem strange as they're all from different countries!

All jingoism aside I wonder if a part of it is the fact that most of the European players are from the European tour which is definately 2nd behind the US tour in terms of quality. Nothing like a perceived inferiority complex to bring out the fight in people and bring them together when they get to face the alleged superior foe.

I did see an interview with Montgomerie discussig the 2004 cup where he said "The US players played for their country, of which they are proud and themselves. The Europeans played for each other."

Again, no idea if that's true or if you can generalise that much. Could just be that the Europeans have spent more time in each other's company and are better friends. Nothing like playing for your mates.

Of course it might just be that it's not played very often and almost by chance two groups of individuals have played several times in recent years with the weaker group winning more often...

It's very simple. The Europeans want it more. They deserve it!
