200nl on stars - 1/2 blinds. you're new to the table (and have no previous notes on any players in the hand) and have a full stack. villain has you covered.

OTB you find [9c]. utg, mp, and MP (villain) all limp. you play. BB plays.

$10 pot. 5-way

flop [7c][5c] utg bets $6. villain raises to $18.

Do:

A: smooth call.
B: fold
C: reraise (and if so, how much?)

I'd smooth call it.... his reraise will limit the number of people on its own, reraising will do nothing but give the guy an opportunity to reraise again. You figure he has something better than a pair of aces with a 9 kicker...so you are drawing....

Smooth call basically telegraphs you are on the flush draw though....

You'd figure he'd raise preflop with an Ace and bigger kicker than you...so i'd probably put him on 2pr......

I thought that re-raising was the second best option. In this spot, I absolutely hate smooth-calling. The problem I see with re-raising is that playing for your stack here is usually not a good idea. The pot is still small because it was unraised. If this was a raised pot it would be an entirely different situation. However, since the pot is still small and MP most likely isn't going anywhere, you are risking A LOT to either win a small pot or get your money in as either a small dog or a big dog.

It does have its benefits in that if your opponents are very observant, they will notice it and tend to give you more action later on. However, at these stakes I find that most people play their cards so straightforward that your table image isn't as important a consideration as it would be at higher levels.
