Two hands from my current 2-4nl session at Stars that I would like some opinions on.

First hand:
I pick up JTh on the button and there was, I think, 3 limpers already, SB calls and BB checks. Flop comes Q72 all hearts. It is checked to the player to my right and he leads out for $20. He is the strongest player at the table, he is a regular here and it is not uncommon to see him with a stack over $800. I have just moved up to this limit full time so I don't have a read on him yet except I do know he is tight-aggresive. I think about calling but the Ah and Kh are very likely to call if I just smooth call so I raise the minimum to $40. After that raise everyone folds including the bettor. Was there anything else I can do to have gotten more out of that?

Hand 2:
I pick up KK in the cut-off after an utg limper(weak player), I raise to $12 and the button(overplays many hands preflop) calls. We see it 3 way and the flop is KA5 with two diamonds. Checked to me and I only lead out for $12 hoping the button will raise with an ace, he just calls quickly though. Here is where I think I messed up. On the turn I check hoping for a bigger bet from him but he leads out for $12 again, I raise to $32 and he folds after a long while. I think I either should have continued to bet on the turn or either check raised the minimum.

Any thoughts?

In hand 1, I don't like the min raise. There are two reasons why I don't like it.

a. It announces the strength of your hand, as most people use the min raise with a monster.
b. It gives the bettor odds to draw if he's got a set of Ah/Kh, and even other players who are looking at implied odds when they call.

I would either call in this spot, hoping to make it look like you've got a hand like KQ with the Kh, or I'd make a real raise to eliminate the drawers and/or make it look more like a protection raise with a decent hand but not the flush.

In hand 2, I think you can raise a bit more preflop. A 2xBB raise means that UTG will definately call, and you've got 3 other players to contend with. I think you need to raise 3xBB or 4xBB. On the flop, I like the small $12 lead-in bet. Most aggressive players will pound on this weakness, sometimes even without an Ace. When button calls, you have to be afraid of him having a drawing hand like QJd. I would definately bet the turn. When you check, your only real intention is to checkraise. Checkraising disguises your hand far less than simply betting again, which the button will expect you to do. With the pot at $66, I think you need to throw out a ~$40 bet. The pot is big enough that you no longer have to worry about squeezing more out of your opponent, but making sure that you give incorrect odds to any drawing hands.

$12 is 3xbb at this table. $8 would be 2xbb. And to be honest, I was in another hand at my tourney table so I didn't even realize utg had limped till I saw the flop.

I agree with Mad Genius on both hands.
If you flat call on hand #1 it will look like YOU have the bare or and he may fire again with his AQ. If you raise bigger, it will look like you have TP and are trying to protect from the flush. I like either of these options better than the min raise.

On hand #2, I would raise to $16 or $20 with KK. I find I still get a caller or 2 at those stakes. Also, I would never check the turn there. A free card could hurt you, but more importantly, you have a strong hand and want to build a big pot.
