Transferring files to new computer

Postby iceman5 » Sat Jul 08, 2006 11:53 am

I just bought a new desktop computer. I have it all hooked up.

Whats the best / easiest way to transfer files from the old one to the new one? Example: PT database.

The old computer is still hooked up but it has no monitor and isnt connected to the internet. I bought a wireless card for the old one but havent installed it yet. I think I might move it to my sons room if I buy a new monitor for it, but he already has a laptop so Im not sure how much use it will get in his room so Im not sure if I want to buy another monitor.

Im really not sure what all is on the old one that I need to move so it would be nice to have them both hooked up at the same time and be able to look at the old one and transfer whatever files that I need to.

Is there some easy program that will do it?
can I email files to myself and then download them to the new computer
Can I transfer the files to a USB drive and install them on the new computer that way? Other better ideas?

There are a bunch of ways you can do this. If you are confident working on computer take the hard drive out of the old computer run it as the 2nd hard drive on the new computer and then copy the files over, this is gonna be the fastest ways to move big files like PT databases. For smaller stuff like word docs you can use a usb thumb drive, burn them on a CD, or Zip them and e-mail them to yourself. Another option is to transfer them over the wireless network though depending on the computers and their operating systems this can be a pain in the neck. There is no program that I know of that helps move files from one computer to another.
