http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00001OPGY/ is great. It does have a laptop area and will hold a 17 inch laptop. You can remove the back straps and the shoulder strap if you like, and it's sturdy as hell. I am a big guy and I put my backpacks through hell and this one has stood up with no wear or tear after 3 years. If I was ONLY carrying a laptop I'd get something different, more along the lines of an actual laptop case but I usually have a few books and stuff with me as well. If my current one ever does break I'll buy another one of these in an instant.
