Doyle Brunson was on my flight back from Costa Rica this morning. I was sitting in the terminal waiting to board and hear a call over the intercom for a "Bruhn-sohn, Doy-al." I looked around and didn't see anyone, but another page was made a few minutes later, and just before they called for boarding, the legend himself sidles up casually, gets in line and boards with no fanfare whatsoever.

Later I passed him again going through the post customs screening where he'd apparently set off one of the detectors and was pulled aside for further inspection. So, I watch in semi disbelief as he's standing there with his arms out getting patted down and once-overed with the hand held metal detector by the * Dallas Fort-Worth * airpot security. The whole thing was kinda surreal and as far as I could tell no one even gave him a second glance. I guess Dallas isn't a big poker town...

I thought about going up and saying hello but he seemed preoccupied and I didn't want to bother him. Also, I couldn't think of what i could say to him that he wouldn't already have heard 700,000 times before.

Anyway, it was cool to see the guy in person and amazing to see him in such a random place.

I didn't ask him for an autograph, just to shake his hand, which he did. I don't ask for autographs. Not cool. The great Bill Russell used to really piss people off when he refused to sign for them, but said, "I'll be happy to shake your hand." I thought that was such a class act thing for him to say that I adopted the idea. I once had Roger Staubach's autograph, but it is long since lost. But I'll never forget shaking the hand of a very hungover Wilt only about two weeks before he passed away. (He was in Boston for a tribute to Russell.)

I have no autographs, but have shaken the hands of dozens of celebs. It always seems to surprise them that I only ask to shake their hand. I said to Pete, "when I tell my father I shook your hand, my stock will go up 20%." Got a laugh. (Even better, when I told my dad, he said, "who?")

Walking through Pottery Barn in Emeryville and see a gorgeous woman walk by, decide she can't be alone in this place and lo and behold Jason Kidd walks right by as well, had to double take to make sure but it certainly was. He may be a PG but damn he was huge.
