Star Wars

Yes I'm a Star Wars geek and proud of it.

Now that I got that out of the way, I was switching back and forth between Ep III on HBO and the Met game. I've seen all of the Star Wars movies more times than I can count, but I think I've changed my attitude just a little bit tonight.

I've had numerous discussions with other Star Wars geeks (I used to work for a book company, you can get into philisophical discussions on any wierd subject, movie, or book every day) about the real point of the Star Wars movies. After the last movie came out a year ago I argued, and still firmly believe, that the Star Wars saga is and always has been about the fall and the redemption of Anakin Skywalker and that he, and not Luke, is definitely the main character.

But after watching it again tonight I thought to myself, THIS BASTARD SLAUGHTERED CHILDREN! THERE IS NO REDEMPTION! It doesn't matter what he does in Jedi. There is no going back from that. What do you guys think?

PS - I still reserve the right to call Darth Vader my favorite fictional character of all time regardless of how many children he slaughtered. I mean it's still fiction after all.

I didn't like star wars that much (pretty much just ripped off a ton of other sci fi stuff and didn't even do it that well IMO, though the original 3 films are brilliantly filmed), but I couldn't believe how badly George Lucas pissed on the hopes and wishes of all the fans who'd waited for 20-odd years for more SW films by turning out 3 new films that ranged (IMO) between being really weak and outright dreadful  ...

But like I say the first 3 films were really well made.

The books are another story all together. Supposedly the New Jedi Knight saga was supposed to be about Anakin Solo, but George Lucas, who has final say on all published material, decided that he didn't want 2 characters named Anakin being the main focus because it may confuse people. So the decision was made to make Jacen Solo the heroin. It took me a long time to get over the death of Chewbacca.

I also recommend die hard fans read the novel of Episode III as it goes far more in depth into the minds of the characters. Specifically, I can think of 2 points off the top of my head:
- The scene where Dooku dies is extended much longer in the novel.
- The novel takes you inside Anakin's head when they put the Darth Vader suit on him.

Good stuff. Also, the novel that was written about the period directly after Episode III is a good read as well. I forget the name of the book though.

Star Wars. Haven't seen it. Is it any good?
