I debated whether I should give my perspective here or not, but what the hell.
I did a year in Baghdad, so the war is probably closer to me than to most.
And I don't give a shit what Maines says, one way or the other. Doesn't matter, never will. If she says she's sorry, so be it. It's not that I don't believe her, it's that I don't care. If she says that she's ashamed to be an American, or whatever she said, that's fine too. If she's really ashamed, I'm sure there are options. If she's just running her mouth, that's fine too...she's certainly not the first or last person who talks shit.
Now if she's surprised at the reaction she got, then she's a moron. There's a reason you don't hold a peace rally in Texas. Because some guy's going to run you over in his Dodge Ram, and the police aren't going to notice. They might accidentally back the ambulance over you. And you'd have to be pretty dense not to know that.
The first rule of public speaking is to know your audience. I reckon she didn't do too well with that.
At the end of the day, what she did wasn't a crime. Anyone who boycotted her didn't commit a crime either, so that's fine too. Anyone who went over the line and threatened her life did commit a crime and should be treated as such.
If I saw her walking down the street tomorrow...well hell, I wouldn't recognize her. But if someone pointed her out, I'd probably walk up to her, look her in the eye, and politely ask her to prove that she doesn't wear panties. Because hey, it's free speech
