The way you played probably got you the max then.... more by luck than good judgement!

A decent rule of thumb (I'd say) is to keep plugging the pot with top set UNLESS there's two low cards AND a flush draw on board. Against any likely bet/raise range when the board is rainbow, you are slight favourite. Just think about the possible holdings your opponent might hold that he would bet/raise and think about how likely they are, and how much equity they have against your holding, and you'll see that you're nicely favoured to get more money in.
