Isthis stupidity just California drivers??

Postby Rhound50 » Fri May 26, 2006 1:28 pm

I got to make the 6 hr drive to my mom's on I-5, and I have to say California drivers are freakin morons. A couple of key points of note.

1. Is it to much to ask for people to maintain a speed? I-5 is like 300 miles of nothing, I usually spend most of it in cruise control at 80-85. It is amazing how many people cant figure out how to maintain a constant speed. I pass someone in cruise, then 5 min later they go flying past me, 5 min later, I'm still in cruise and I'm passing them again. Huh??

2. My favorite is the people that think since the speed limit is 70 that they should do 70 in the left lane. Just a hint when there are cars chaning lanes and flying by you on the right every 30 seconds you are in fact impeading traffic. Driving is not a spectator sport, please at least pay a little bit of attention.

3. Having someone pass you is NOT an insult to you manhood. Why is it that guys do this stupid shit. I come up on someone doing 70 MPH so I try to pass them, so of course they have to speed up to whatever speed I'm doing so I cant pass them . Finally at 90 or so I say fuck it and slow back down to 80 and pull in behind them. Of course they slow back down to 70 like they were doing before. Ok dumbshit, I driver a Civic you drive a CRV no one wants to see our two slow ass cars race, all I want to do it get ahead of you so I can reset my cruise at 80 and keep going on my way.

Are drivers this stupid everywhere or is it just California?

I don't see #1 very often, but the other two are standard.

Although #3 is the most annoying, especially when they're driving slow in a single lane stretch then speed up when there's a passing lane.

I'm in Canada.

WTF??? You think that counts as stupid driving?

You've obviously never driven in Portugal or Italy.

pretty much everywhere but some are worse than others. Jersey drivers are normally pretty aggressive so people know better most of the time. we are a pretty crowded state with 55mph or 65mph speed limits on highways but on some, if you are going only 75mph, you are in the way as 80 is the normal speed. This isn't in an isolated area, its through congested areas of NJ too.

One thing we have that we call the "Jersey Slide" is when you are in the fast lane on a highway and will have to exit soon. Instead of moving over in a timely manner to get off, we stay in the fast lane often til a couple hundred feet at most from the exit, put on our blinker (at least i do) and slide over the needed amount of lanes to exit, whether that be 2 or even as many as 4. I don't do this often but its pretty common.

Driving down to Delaware to see my parents, i see your list much more, mainly 2. If someone needs to make a left turn anywhere in the next 1-4 miles, they just stay in the left lane, no matter the speed since they know they are gonna get over eventually. apparently going faster or moving over to the right to move over to the left later is out of the question.

I remember driving on 80 from California to chicago/Indianapolis and back again to the Bay Area. The only cars that passed on the right, were driving way over the speed limit, and were staying in the left lane even though they weren't passing had CALIF plates.

Yeah, we suck here in this state, and we have the largest amount of bad drivers in the country. That probably has to do with having the biggest population, but still.

Come to Massachusetts or Rhode Island statistically the worst drivers in the country. Mass pike = Indy 500.

Whilst it's pretty much the opposite of the original post, you've never seen bad, maniacal driving until you've been in Italy, big ass trucks overtaking a convoy of three other trucks on a hillside road, around a blind corner is not that uncommon.

actually Fijian/Indian drivers are the worst I have seen by far (in Fiji most of the taxi drivers are Indians).

They believe in fate/destiny and whilst they are happy to bless the car before use they then seem to think whether they live or die is in Fate's hands not theirs - I once sped along a small and windy Fijian coastal road in a cab/van... I stopped counting after we had gonne round 15 blind corners on the wrong side/whilst overtaking...

In India and Nepal the same situation prevailed but the roads were a little bigger and the drving not quite so bad (perhaps more cars meant the very worst drivers were weeded out by natural selection) - that said many more cars and people probably made India more dangerous even if it felt slightly safer - and you had to hire motorbikes that you drove around at night down dirt tracks without helmets to get to full moion parties in Goa etc...

Ah memories - of course as a father of two, I don't even break the speed limit by more than 5mph nowadays ...

:? ..

I'd have to agree about indian drivers (in india) being the worst. There ARE no road rules. The speed limit is as fast as you can go without crashing. In most places, there are no lanes. When you're waiting at the lights and the light turns green, every single car behind you will automatically honk their horn for you to hurry up and go, even though the light has only been green .5 of a second.
Poker is silly.

It is not enough to be good at chess, you must also play well.

Somewhere in the world someone is training when you are not. When you race him, he will win.

I've never been to India, but Nigerian drivers seem to accept an early death as inevitable.
