Is Poker a sport?

Brian, I love it. You are one funny sumbeach.

Ok, finally, I think I've got one. If this doesn't come closest to an equivalent, I'm not going to find it. (Screw chess.)

Is billiards a sport?

as someone who can't use my left at the moment after nearly cutting my thumb off, this a reason i think chess, poker, backgammon, scrabble and monopoly are games not sports: you can have no arms or legs and be able to play unhindered, you could have someone else performing all your actions without a justifiable decrease in performance.

no offence to the quadraplegics (and tetraplegics?) that could be amongst us.

Anthing that a 400 pound man can play wearing a shirt that is the size of a backpacking tent and compete on the same level as a normal person is not a sport, I'd say its a game.

In all seriousness the difference between pool and poker is that pool involves physical movements to win, poker involves thinking. The same 400 pound man is not going to be a pool champion but he could win next years WSOP.

Actually, pool would be a bad example there as I know several very overweight individuals who could wipe the floor with most players at pool. Then there's also the guy in the wheelchair that I know who is an absolute master at one pocket...

You are correct mendon, I wouldn't go as far as to say that pool players are athelets but if you look at all the top players in the world both male and female I cant think of one that is a big as say Greg Raymer. Pool is all about muscle memory, while poker is all about memory.
