Having always lived in middle-class suburban areas I gotta say I don't see what's so much nicer about the San Fran picture then your neighborhood. Theres definately something decidedly cool and different about living in a big city (in my mind at least, I've never done it yet but would like to live in maybe NYC for a while at some point), but I think growing up in a suburan area is ideal.
