Well spotted. 
Elements of British self-loathing are present, certainly, but it's more to do with a dislike of weak copies of US bands - the 53rd state mentality.
It's difficult for British bands to retain their Britishness because the rock template is US-defined, but The Who and The Kinks (and others) managed it without lasping into Blur-like faux Cockney pastiche, for instance.
