Widescreen vs. Regular Monitors

Postby T-Rod » Tue Apr 11, 2006 8:35 am

We are going to buy a new flat screen monitor for my PC. By "we" I mean, me, my girlfriend, and all the poker fishes out there.

What's the difference between the widecreen versus regular sized monitors? I have a 2.8GHZ, 1.5MB RAM, and whatever was the best graphics card 2 years ago.

Will my screen be all distorted if I try to multitable?

Also, some are about $250 and others are $500. What's the difference? I have no idea what all the compression rates, etc. mean

We'll use this mostly for poker and work spreadsheet stuff with some games from time to time.

Thanks.

Widescreen is the best ever. Get something with WUXGA (1920x1200). You'll never go back. As of a few months ago the only people making monitors with WUXGA were Dell and Apple, so I don't know if that's changed or not. No, there's no distortion, but the difference between widescreen (1920x1200) and normal (1600x1200) is having your screen filled by 4 tables versus being able to play 6 tables with a little overlap (7 on Party).

It's definitely not worth that much more. For that price you could get 2 of the FP2001's which is equivalent to 3200 x 1200, enough to easily fit 8 tables of any site you want. I'm fairly sure that any graphics card should be able to run any monitor you get, unless you're thinking of having two connected at once in which case you'd need to have a look around the back of your computer case and see if there are two input slots where a monitor plugs into, if there are then you're compatible, if there aren't then you're not.

Sorry to keep up the questions here.

Okay, Dell as a 21" widescreen for about $500. But they say its 1680X1050 in resolution. That seems werid but I guess its because its a widescreen? So will I be able to have 4 non-overlapping tables at that resolution (its not 1600X1200).

With the smaller widescreen you're going to run into issues with larger client tables, like Absolute. You should be able to get 4 UB tables on there OK though. If I had to pick between 1600x1200 and 1680x1050, I'd take the 1600x1200, and you know how much of a proponent of widescreen I am, so that's saying something. That said I think I saw a deal at fatwallet for the 21 inch widescreen you're talking about for like $336 (plus you get 3% cash back + $5 if you buy through fatwallet's link).

There are 2 versions you are looking at the DELL 20.1 FPW. You should be looking at the DELL 20.1 FP.

They run at different resolutions...Verify that the one you are going to purchase is 1600*1200 that little bit makes a big difference!

Try this:
