What do you do? And more importantly, if it's dangerous, why don't you carry a gun?

Eskrima, Kali, and Arnis are all Filipino martial arts that revolve around knifes and batons IIRC.

Step 1: Club attacker in leg, slightly above knee.
Step 2: Laugh as your attacker writhes in pain with his shattered femur.

I had (I believe) one of those when I went to school in Philadelphia. It's about 7 inches long and when you snap it out, it expands to 16" with a not-so-neighborly little steel ball on the end...

Basic technique--if you're in trouble, let him get close (arms' length), and whack him (as droqqa said) right over his knee. Then if you want to be a real prick, THEN hit him with the pepper spray (all the while praying he doesnt have a gun)

Baton + wrist = unable to fire gun.

Why the need always to resort to violence? Instead, you could carry around a thermos flask full of tea, and invite your potential assailant to share a mug with you as you sort out your differences in a civilised manner.

Then club the f***r when he's off guard.

I have one and Im trained to use it but for obvious reasons, I cant give any advice on how to use it.

Let me just say that you can kill with it, so dont hit anyone in the head or face unless your life is in imminent danger. Saying "I didnt know it would cause that much damage" isnt going to helpp you at your trial.

I will say that if you hit him in the common peronial nerve (which is on the outside of the leg just below the knee), he will wish he had never met you (without causing him any permanant injury)
