1-2 Year Prediction--IRAQ

Postby T-Rod » Fri Oct 20, 2006 1:34 pm

Okay, before I start, I want to challenge the BTP community and myself here. I challenge us to take an objective look at this situation and give an honest, non-partisan answer.

Prediction: The Democrats are going to take control of the House of Representatives and maybe even the Senate. The pressure for a "withdrawl" from Iraq will grow to enormous prorportions where its discussed each day on every news show. US and allied forces will make a large move out of the region handing over policing, etc. to the Iraqis themselves.

Now for the bad part. Iraq simply collapses into chaos. The government cannot stop the extremists who now feel emboldened having forced the big Satan to leave. Iraq becomes a nice little camp ground for terrorist groups to train, etc. There's now way the US can go back because the political movement is firmly against getting out of this "quagmire." Iran extends its sphere of influence over part of the country.

So you are President (not Bush, say a new Pres in 2008). What do you do now?

Unacceptable Answers in the Spirt of this Question Are:
1) Bush screwed it up so bad that I could never fix it. It's all his fault.
2) The Democrats/Media/Clinton whoever screwed it up so bad thatI could never fix it and it's all their fault.

BTW, I think the chance of this happening is about 90%. I also think by looking at this question, you might understand better what some of the world's leaders are worried about.

Well, what was the original goal of the war?

1) WMD? OK, there either wasnt any, there was but its gone, or it was moved and we cant find it. Either way, if finding / destorying WMD was the goal, theres no reason for us to be there. Get the hell out and let the chips fall where they may.

2) Sadam needs to be removed from power? Done already. Get the hell out and let the chips fall where they may.

3) Kill terrorists? We've done plenty of that and we'll never get them all. Besides killing everyone, I dont see any way we can efficiently rid the country of more terrorists without losing more of our guys than is acceptable. We got the bulk of them already. Get the hell out and let the chips fall where they may.

4) Oil? Its still there. Get the hell out and let the chips fall where they may.

5) Stability of the region? We've failed. Get the hell out and let the chips fall where they may.

If the goal of this war was something other one of these 5 reasons, Id like to know what it was.

World War 11.

Wow you yanks have been busy; we've only counted 2 so far..what was no 8 - grenada?

:)

The answer is simply that the peace is not tenable - you are most probably going to have to withdraw and then have a bloodbath - best hope is for quick partition and low level fighting with maybe some security help from regional powers and a few black ops vs al quaida fighters that remain..
