What's Your Family Christmas Tradition?

Postby Johnny Hughes » Fri Dec 23, 2005 5:03 pm

My Grandfather farmed 160 acres near Duke, Oklahoma from 1890 to 1945 and raised 13 kids. Times were very hard way before the depression. Grandpa made sure that every kid living on the farm got an orange at Christmas. Since refrigerated trains weren't around oranges were a rare treat. My Grandma would boil the orange peels and soak them in Karo syrup and roll them in sugar to make a Christmas candy.

My cousins in California are descendents of these dust bowl Okies and are as affluent as many educated Californians. They always have given an orange to each child at Christmas, along with their other gifts, to remind them or harder times and their rich family history. What's your family Christmas tradition? I'd especially like to hear from the English contingent.

You are so messed up, EP.

We don't do anything too special here. Eat on christrmas eve, wake up, look in your stocking, open presents, eat breakfast. Our roots are all over the place so we don't have anything too crazy.

p.s. I was kidding. We do not do anything special for Christmas. My comment was supposed to be a "tongue in cheek" reference to people going crazy over saying "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas". I just assume that everyone else makes the weird associations I do.

My family is Jewish so we celebrate "not Christmas" as my dad used to call it. The world pretty much shuts down for Chistmas so we invite some Jewish friends over, make a big ass dinner and celebrate the fact that we are not celebrating Christmas.

As I found out about 10 hours ago, my family tradition is for me to get a nice buzz going and then find out we're going to the candle-light christmast church service. Around now I get very frustrated because I've wasted a few beers just getting a buzz, and will be sober by the time I get back, and because I'm not a christian, and going to church does not exactly make me happy. Especially because my family's church is so ultra-right wing, anti-gay, anti-abortion, anti-everything, and they preach it no matter what (even on christmas!!).

Why does your family make you go to church if you aren't a Christian?

Used to be my mom and dad and sister together Xmas eve, have a Prime Rib dinner with all the good stuff, and then head off to midnight mass, then the other relatives come over the next night and open the presents w/ us...but now my sister has a kid and things have changes of course, for the better since my nephew arrived.

Now it's time to change the traditions...and it's still a good time.

Best thing about poker is that the cardhouses are always open on every holiday aren't they? That is the best...gives someone w/ no place to go to be around others and not experience the loneliness the holidays sometimes brings.

Have a Happy Christmas and I hope you get the chance to drink as much hot sake as I do on New Years!

Well my whole family is christian and they are constantly nagging me about my heathen ways. I renounced the whole religion thing a year or two ago. But, since I'm living here for now, their house, their rules, eh?
