The WORST casino poker game in the world..

Postby GodlikeRoy » Sat Apr 29, 2006 6:32 pm

So last night I get all pysched up about going to a casino for the first time, seeing as I just turned 18 a few days ago and all.. I learn that they only have 5/10 and 10/20 limit games, and being a mostly NL player i'm disappointed but figure that they should still be VERY soft..and how right I was! Everyone limped every pot, everyone called every raise, and people would call with UNDERs to the flop, hit the turn for 2nd or 3rd pair, then call to the river.. seems standard for most live casino games right? There was the old man sitting to my right, the drunk across the table, the guy who THINKS he's uberpro but he's terrible too.. the gus hansen wannabe, etc, etc.. I sit down laughing..

First hand I get asked to post my BB of $5, and since i'm sitting in the game with a friend, he's posting too, as is another person (the table is just being formed) so i figure we've got a family pot going on.. then I get told to put in an extra white chip for the $1 "participation fee". What?! Basically, it's the rake. yup, the rake is $1, from every person, for every pot, regardless of whether you see past the flop or not..this s for a 5/10 limit game  It has to be mathematically impossible to beat this game right? :?

So we leave after a couple of orbits (one of my friends up like $400 after hitting quads and KK turned boat) and me down about $60 after chasing down a gutshot WITH odds the whole way.. we go get a few drinks and check out a couple of bars in the city, come back and play the 1c pokies for shits and giggles, and find out they have 10/20 game with a "comission" based rake, basically a % of each pot..sounds much better! So we go on up to the room they hold the game in and buyin, then we get told the rake is 5% of the pot capped at $30! Now being in the shitfaced drunk state that I was, i thought this was a really good deal.. and it still must be better than the $1 per pot/per hand crap they have going on in their 5/10 game but that's fricken HUGE too.. is that game even beatable?? Not being a liimt player and having my mathematical abilities severely compromised atm i can't exactly figure it out so help me out someone :!:

Am I right in thinking this is the WORST casino in the world to play poker in? Rake-wise, that is..

I would not pay $1 per hand. That is over $300/hr rake per table, which is ridiculous.

no reason to sit at these games. you're probably ahead EV-wise playing craps or BJ. still negative, but not as much.

So true, I doubt i'll ever be going back there again..

On another (somewhat scary) note, i found out from one of my mates who i was out with last night that I sat in the 10/20 game for abour an HOUR and held my own/won a little.. The scary part is I was so far gone I can't remember a single hand that I played

A pro like you should have known all this earlier. In any game under 20 limit, the rake makes it almost impossible to win. The rake also means you need to play a tight game and not play a lot of pots. Drunk people lose regardless of the rake. Poker needs people like you. You bring the money.
