The Infamous "Boat Draw"

Postby briachek » Tue Jan 18, 2005 3:15 pm

This was a term created by accident but in all seriousness by one of the terrible players that would play at the home games at my house. The way it was coined makes me laugh until this day, especially since it worked out so well for me.

Playing in a $20 buy in, .25/.50 blind home game of dealers choice (either NL HE or NL Omaha Hi). This guy, we'll call him Paul, loved to play but overvalued his hands, called too often and loved to try to bully in omaha. I let him win many small pots, waiting to get him in a big one. I had a stack of about $75, Pat had $35, and another player, "Neil", had $140. The reason he had that much was due to him earning it, he bought in for almost that much once one person won a HUGE pot and started bullying. Neil is a loose, aggressive player that will get all his chips in at a moments notice.

In Omaha, I get [Qs] [Js] xx. The other cards didn't matter.

Flop comes KT2, rainbow, ten of spades. I'm first to act and we check it around. Turn comes the beautiful [9s], giving me the nut straight, and open ended straight flush draw, or just Q high flush draw. I bet $2.50 into the nearly $2 pot. Neil calls, Paul min raises. Nice! I raise it an additional $10 on top to make it $15 to go. Neil hates getting caught in the middle of these "D*ick waving contests" so he just states "screw this, I'm all in!" Paul calls IMMEDIATELY for his entire $35 stack. I'm wondering what kind of draws and hands i'm up against but no way I'm gonna fold the nuts with possibility to improving to more if I'm currently tied. I called

Before the river, I get everyone to turn over their cards. I show my QJs saying nut straight with flush draw. Neil has QJ but no other draw so I'm on a freeroll with him. Paul triumpantly turns over his mighty XX9-2 off and proudly states "Boat Draw!" like this was something he trapped us with and he was ahead and win without a doubt. Bottom two pair. Unbelievable. We all just look at each other too stunned to laugh since the pot is still not decided.

The river comes the beautiful [As] giving me the Queen high flush and about a $180 pot. Neil is disgusted and Paul looks just as disappointed. He left immediately and hasn't returned since. However, he left us with a memory that we will always remember and a term we use affectionally. Plus, we think he shorted the bank $20 in a final act of vengence which ended up being taken out of my payout so it seems I didn't get his full stack after all.

Hope you get a smile from this and know now why people call big raises on a coordinated board with 2 pair. They had a boat draw and you can't fold a boat or a possible boat.

That very nearly made me shed a tear I laughed so much.

I'm going to use that expression at the first available opportunity.
