Archeteuthis, the giant squid, has been replaced nominally as the largest invertebrate in existence by the "Collosal Squid", a little known creature of a related (but different) genus. Of the few examples caught, none have measured more than around 25 feet from body to tentacles. However, extrapolation from beaks found in the stomachs of sperm whales, (one of only two known predators of such collosal squid) which have been found to be larger in size than those of the giant squid, suggest that the heavier and fatter collosal squid can potentially reach sizes of up to 15 metres (50 feet), making it the largest animal on earth outside of the cetaceans (whale family).
Despite the size and predatory ferocity of the deep-sea giant and collosal squid, and their more commonly seen ancestor, the 5-to-8-foot long Humboldt squid (known for its aggression and opportunism), there are no confirmed recorded incidents of squid killing and eating human beings.
