I was on a consulting project down in Houston, When I walked into the building that morning, the receptionist there said something about the White House being on fire - nothing about the towers. They had a little fitness room with 3 TV's, and that room was standing-room only with people watching CNN.
I actually tried getting some work done that day, but between wandering back to the TV's and trying to get any news site to load, not much work was being done by anybody. Finally, upper management sent a company-wide e-mail saying that anyone who wanted to go home early could, and since I wasn't getting anything done anyway, I took them up on that offer.
Two of my aunts were flight attendants for Continental, and had been for some time. One of them was in training in NYC that day and saw the second plane hit. The other was the lead attendant on a Continental flight out of Newark that morning - as it turned out, the plane that was in front of theirs in the take-off line was one of the planes that was hijacked. It could have very easily have been her plane. Afterward, they both took Continental up on their offer of a 1-year leave of absence, but neither one of them returned to their jobs. Can't say that I blame them...
