Have a nice time, i was in Budapest for new year and really liked the place.
I assume you're staying in Pest? didn't see much of Buda, but then, there didn't seem to be much to see.
Assuming you haven't been there before and you read this before you leave here's my budapest guide:
as amazing as the castle looks from a distance lit up, up close i was less entertained. Restaurants are cheap, cigarettes are cheap, beer is cheap but not as crazily cheap as guide books say.
In restaurants they seem to have one 20-something who due to a specific endofcoldwar-age ratio is able to speak english.
the subway and trams were confusing for the 'do i really need to buy a ticket' factor, but then, we ended up walking everywhere.
do not get the public bus from airport to the subway station; you'll be stood up with luggage with half a plane load of people.
Hungarian is insane, i usually try to learn a few useful phrases/words, hungarian does not allow this, i had to settle for hello and thank you.
i was expecting the weather to be horrifyingly cold, to a brit, it was cold but not as bad as i was expecting.
it's quite endearing to see that most restaurants have a dish served with mashed potato.
Portions are large, though yanks should still order a second portion just in case
overall budapest is somewhere i definitely want to go back to, 3 days wasn't long enough. Hopefully you read this before you leave, though i'm half expecting you to tell me you lived in budapest until you were 20 or something.
