I'm somewhat on the fence with regard to the death penalty, I'm generally against it except for people who have the amount of demonstrable guilt that Saddam does or people I think deserve it (I am aware of the arrogant hipocrisy within this last statement, I am no less guilty of thinking that I am better arbiter of issues than most others are)

But the amount of people who died during his trial, whilst unproven as far as I know, illustrates that prison may not stop his reach.

I'd say the death penalty is major issue that I have yet to create particular opinion on, which is handy because my views have no effect with it not being a voting issue in UK politics.

I agree with the death sentence whole heartedly.

I do think we need another poll though. How long until everyone is claiming this is a US Republican conspiracy to have his death sentence right before the elections!!! Conspiracy!!!!

Only problem with being a cynic like that is that you can't recognize when things move from bad to really, really, really bad. Or from really, really, really bad back up to just bad.

But I'm glad you agree with me Ice that it's a slam dunk case that the Repubs did do what T-Rod said only conspiracy theorists would think they did. Glad to hear you've joined the dark side of conspiracy theory.

The only thing that's wrong with it is that, in order to meet the deadline, it sounds like they had to cut a bunch of corners on the trial. Among other things, he has been found guilty and condemned to death, but the verdict isn't actually ready. He hasn't been told what he has been found guilty of, or based on what evidence. All of that won't be ready until after our election.

Also, a bunch of defense witnesses were never called. And Saddam wasn't even tried on most of the more horrible charges of the things he did. Didn't have time to get through all the evidence and all the witnesses in time for our elections, so they cut it short.

Not that there's any doubt the guy is guilty of a jillion horrible things, and deserves the death penalty. But it would have been nice to do the trial right, just to have something go right in Iraq.

It's a coincidence. Give it another two weeks whilst the whole country melts down.

Trust me, the repubs don't want a LOT of media attention on Saddam's execution as it'll turn Iraq into an even less nice place to be. I bet you any money you like within a week either way of the execution date there'll be a massive insurgent attack, suicide bomb or otherwise, on US troops. I'd also bet you you won't find a bookmaker who'll give you odds on that. If it's an election stunt it's a pretty risky one as there will be a lot of death in Iraq in the next month.
