When I was very young, the movie "The Hustler" with Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason made a huge impression on me. In the middle of an all night pool match, Gleason grooms himself in the bathroom and looks fresh and great. Newman is drinking and looking disheveled. Newman comments on Gleason's looking great. Gleason busts him right down to the felt. Gambler's ruin.

I used to play in bridge tournaments that had an afternoon and evening session. Between sessions, I would shower and change clothes because it would wake me up and make me feel good.
